The InterConnect initiative was launched in 2012 to explore issues around ethnic diversity of the University. It initially focused on Black and Minority Ethnic staff, and in 2016 has broadened its remit to address a broad inclusion agenda encompassing Race, Religion or Belief, Sexual Orientation and Gender Reassignment.
The InterConnect Steering Group (ICSG) has an oversight of the initiative, and helps to develop local actions and pilot projects that aim to progress equality and inclusion at the University. The InterConnect Steering Group includes representatives of academic and professional and support staff, colleges, postdoctoral fellows and students as well as HR and E&D experts. It is chaired by University’s Race Equality Champion Professor Roel Sterckx and reports to the E&D Committee.
Examples of projects undertaken in the framework of the InterConnect initiative include a “diversity review” of the image the University projects through its webpage pictures with regard to ethnicity/race, gender and age. In the confines of another project, a check-list for line managers is developed to provide a first stop advice for incoming and new line managers, as well as those who have been managing staff or students for some time. It will intend to provide information on best practice in line management and offer guidelines on how to line manage in an inclusive way.
